Reusable sanitary pads, menstrual cups will save you some serious money

When the Tampon Tax was lifted at the beginning of this year, it was seen as a huge step towards gender equality. For centuries, women had been paying GST on female sanitary items whilst other health products, including condoms and Viagara, were exempt. So literally, women were been taxed for being women. Ridiculous, right?

However, although a profound moment in history, purchasing essential sanitary items still comes at a cost for women.

In fact, the average woman will use 120,000 to 16,000 disposable pads, panty-liners, and tampons in her lifetime. With the average supermarket price for one disposable product being 30 cents, this equates to a *minimum* spending of $3,600 throughout a woman’s lifetime just on hygiene products alone. Moreover, every disposable pad uses four plastic bags (which will take approximately 500 years to breakdown) and every tampon is wrapped in layers of plastic, meaning it’s drastically costing our earth.

It’s a big price to pay for an essential item, which is why more and more companies are developing reusable sanitary product to help us women to not only save some serious dollars, but to also help us make an impact on the environment.

Okay, we get it – the idea of reusing sanitary products does seem *very* unhygienic, but kid you not, they are probs more sanitary than their single-use counterpart when you really think about it.

Here are 3 reusable sanitary products we are loving at the moment.

1. Modibodi

When it comes to reusable sanitary products, Modibodi is the OG. It’s been voted time and time again as the #1 period and leak proof underwear brand, and has recently being added to the Axe Tampon Tax Bill 2018, meaning their products GST-free. Modibodi’s underwear also comes in four different absorbency strengths, ranging from ‘superlight’ to ‘heavy/overnight’.

The brand has also just launched their range of period-proof leggings, so yes, you can indeed go to the gym commando and not have to worry about anything happening down there.

2. THINX

THINX Underwear was launched back in 2014 in New York by three best friends. Only a year later the brand was named by TIME MAGINE as one of the best inventions of 2015. Every pair of THINX underwear is made with a signature 4-layer technology for ultimate period protection – moisture-wicking cotton, an odour-fighting lining, superabsorbent fabric (one underwear can hold up to two tampons’ worth of fluid), and a leak-resistant barrier.

The brand is so confident you’ll love your new machine-washable and reusable briefs, that they also offer a 60 day money-back guarantee in the very slightest chance you’re not happy. But TBH, you’d have to be out of your mind to return such a brilliant purchase.

3. Lunette

If you’re new to the world of menstrual cups, Australian brand Lunette is a great place to start. Not only does the soft and flexible material make it more comfortable to use, it’s made with the highest medical grade silicone that is BPA free and contains zero chemicals. The cleverly designed stem, ridges, and larger air holes also makes it easier to use and clean.

If that isn’t enough to convince you, you should also know that just one Lunette cup will last you 10 whopping years. That’s a helluva lot of money AND plastic.
