How Vanessa Hudgens stays low carb and still eats pizza

It’s confirmed: there is not a single workout or diet Vanessa Hudgens hasn’t tried. She is the wellness aficionado of the celeb world, so much so, she’s on the two biggest diets of the moment: intermittent fasting and keto.

Why? Partly to stay in tip-top shape, but most importantly, so she doesn’t have to give up on her carb addiction.

“I’ve been intermittent fasting a lot, because for me, I love pasta, I love pizza, and when I’m not eating carbs I feel like a little piece of me dies,” she told PEOPLE in an interview.

Intermittent fasting is great, because when I am fasting – those first two weeks are definitely rough, I’m not going to lie, but after that I feel more grounded and powerful in my workouts. And I get the nutrients that I need when I eat, but then I also eat what I want,” Hudgens added.

The High School Musical star explained she eats for six hours – between 12pm and 6pm – and fasts for the remaining 18.

“I feel like it’s a recipe that works for me,” she said. “Everyone’s different of course, but for me, that’s what’s been the most beneficial so far.”

Of course, fasting for that long can impact your mood and energy levels, so to keep her metabolism on its toes and remain “really energetic”, the 30-year-old goes “back and forth” between intermittent fasting and the keto diet.

“People a lot of times think of fats in diets as a negative thing, and when you’re doing keto it’s a very positive thing. I’m always making sure I’m getting those healthy fats in, so I eat a LOT of almond butter. You feel really energetic and supported on the keto diet.”

During her keto mode, she switches her carb-cravings for lots of healthy fats, lean protein and veggies.

In an interview on the Rachael Ray Show, the actress and singer revealed what a typical keto day on a plate looks like to her. She usually starts her day with eggs, bacon and half and avo for brekkie, followed by a big salad made with chicken, more avo, lots of greens and a sprinkle of nuts or fruit for lunch. Then dinner is usually grilled salmon or steak topped with butter, and a salad and sautéed veggies on the side.

Following this low-carb high-fat diet helped her shed weight after she gained 9kg for an acting role.

“No carbs. No dairy. No refined sugar. [It’s] eating real foods. It’s honestly high-fat, high-protein,” Hudgens explained in the interview. “It’s what’s going to make you feel fuller longer.’
