In the 65 days before her phenomenal performance at Coachella in 2018, global superstar Beyoncé embarked on one of the toughest training regimes and diets of her life to get in shape for the show.
So tough was the challenge she set herself, that in her new Netflix documentary Homecoming, the mother of three admits she will, “never, ever push myself that far again.”
After delivering her twins Sir and Rumi in June 2017 by emergency C-section, Beyoncé reveals in Homecoming that she feared she would, “never be the same physically, my strength and endurance would never be the same.”
To prepare for what was to be her comeback performance at Coachella, the star embarked on a punishing postpartum, pre-performance diet that she opens up about her new documentary for the first time.
Eight months before the festival, the star began gruelling rehearsals for the show whilst fitting in additional gym workouts and sessions at Soul Cycle to help her get back in shape and build her fitness back up.
“The hours were unbelievable,” she admits.
To lose the weight she put on during her pregnancy, Beyoncé also confesses that she began an incredibly restrictive, stringent diet that left her feeling, “hungry.”
“In order for me to meet my goal, I’m limiting myself to no bread, no carbs, no sugar, no dairy, no meat, no fish, no alcohol,” Beyoncé reveals in the documentary.
Cutting the carbs that would usually have fuelled her body and supplied her with essential energy during her gruelling, lengthy rehearsals sounds punishing and near impossible, and while Beyonce stuck to the regime and pulled off a historic Coachella performance to boot, the superstar admits that she will ‘never’ be putting herself through a similar diet and exercise programme ever again.
“I have children. I have a husband. I have to take care of my body. I definitely pushed myself further than I knew I could,” she says near the end of the film. “And I learned a very valuable lesson: I will never, ever push myself that far again.”
Beyoncé’s candid confessions about her punishing diet ahead of Coachella in 2018 for the Netflix special are not the first time the singer has opened up about what she eats to maintain her figure.
Revealing in the past that she is, “not naturally skinny” the performer has spoken previously about following a ‘Master Cleanse’ to slim down for Dreamgirls, and trying the ‘Herculean Diet’ to lose 60 pounds following the birth of her first daughter.
